Maya Foundation

Parents pay no school fees. They contribute workdays instead. The rest the campus largely earns itself: an organic farm and livestock run as a social enterprise, feeding a kitchen that serves three meals a day, next to a library, a computer lab, sports fields and a small medical clinic. Maya Home, the residential building, takes in children who cannot stay in their home situation. A school bus brings in children from villages where opening a school of their own is not financially possible.

The foundation's own line is that education is a right, not a privilege. Its Dutch board works unpaid: in its own words, every euro goes directly to the school, there are no overhead costs, and all organisational members work voluntarily, without salaries or compensation.
