Every summer Stichting Breinspoken runs a summer camp for children and young people aged 8 to 18 who are growing up with a parent with dementia. They come together with their healthy parent, and every child in the family is welcome. Many of these children know no one else in the same situation; as one of them put it: "There are no children on my street with a father or mother with dementia."
From 13 to 16 August 2026 the camp is held at Kanoa Outdoor Events in Wolphaartsdijk, Zeeland. Each family sleeps in its own safari tent, and four days are filled with canoeing, climbing, archery, swimming, paddleboarding, crafts, circus skills and games. Guest speakers talk about dementia at a child's level, and while the children play, the parents join group conversations led by experts. The whole camp runs on trained staff.
Taking part carries no mandatory cost: since 2026 the camp asks only a voluntary contribution, and it is all-inclusive — food, accommodation and every activity. That is only possible with donations. To keep making a place like this possible for children growing up with a parent with young-onset dementia, this fundraiser covers the budget for the 2026 summer camp.
